Rating :- A zom-com – a zombie comedy – that sets up the attitude that is expected from the audience: suspend disbelief. If you are able to do that then you will buy into the stoner world of two urban slackers and their virtuous friend who find themselves in the middle of a bizarre experience. Rahul Jaykar is a successful singer with an inexplicable addiction to alcohol. It’s irrational, dangerous and Aditya Roy Kapur’s depiction of a drunk is not even convincing. We see the characters going through or putting others through a test of love. To the ignorance of the makers, the film gradually becomes a test of your patience and intellect. Ultimately it ends up cheating you. For starters, there is no murder in the film. None. Zero. What we see murdered is the filmmaker’s ability to think as what ends up on screen lacks any sort of conviction. This is the directorial debut of Vishesh Bhatt (Mukesh Bhatt’s son) who shows no promise whatsoever. The first hour is Sara Loren trying very hard to act. The second hour is Aditi Rao Hydari trying to rescue the film. For two and a half hours, Randeep Hooda is trying to be taken seriously. Mama’s strength lies in its atmosphere and for the first hour or so; the movie holds a spell over you thanks to some creepy visuals and background score that hits all the right notes. There is ever-present sense of dread that drips from every frame like cold sweat and till the movie’s biggest reveal turns the monster in the shadows into a C.G.I. abomination it’s one of the best horror movies I’ve seen in the past year. Special 26 is a cracker of a film. Con movies are difficult to make, especially when we have seen almost every kind of con on celluloid already. Ocean’s Eleven (2001), The Sting (1973), Catch Me If You Can (2002), Nine Queens (2002) you name it. For the first hour or so I was enjoying it but not quite loving it. It had two thrilling sequences but the rest of it didn’t soar, not to mention the wafer-thin characterization. During the interval, I wished the film would get better. I wanted to know these people more. I wanted to get wowed. Probably even wanted to get fooled. (A good con movie is always one step ahead of us). How many films these days actually do get better?
